It's Giving Wednesday, and this time, 7 Can Help is teaming up with Onesies for OneWorld. Many women across the metro don't have access to critical items they need for their newborns, but a program started in 2013 changed the way care looks for the nonprofit. Kira Simons is a mom of two, raising her 7-year-old son and now her new baby girl, Paloma. In 2018, she became a patient at OneWorld, during a time in her life when she needed the most care. "I was going through some struggles of my own with addiction and things like that," she said. The community health center became her place of healing while she started her road to sobriety. "OneWorld has a place in my heart because they really accepted me and were not judgmental," Simons said. And once she became pregnant, that support grew through each trimester. "It's taken a lot of stress off just being a new mom," she said. Every time Simons came for an appointment, she left with "baby bucks," a reward for ensuring her growing baby is safe."To just come in here once in a while and get things that we need and not have to go to the store," she said. It's through the Baby Boutique, a free resource to help moms as they welcome a new life in the world. "Wipes, some outfits, some like nursing bras and things like that that help me with my day-to-day life with the baby," Simons said. Since starting this program at OneWorld, CEO Andrea Skolken said they've seen a 35% increase in women seeking prenatal care and sticking to it. "The more prenatal care a mom gets, the better. It's been proven, and data shows the better outcomes for the baby," Skolken said. From her addiction to her sobriety, to becoming pregnant and having her daughter. Now, Simons is an employee of the place that shaped her life. "The atmosphere is so welcoming, and they're so accepting of all people," she Simons said.
